How Long Does CBD Stay in Urine?
Evidence-based answer reviewed against SAMHSA cutoffs and FDA assay documentation · Updated August 2026
Quick answer: Most people clear CBD from urine within CBD itself: not tested; contaminating THC could register 3+ days of last use — heavy or daily use stretches that window substantially. CBD itself is never screened. Tests look only for THC-COOH (50 ng/mL initial urine).
CBD detection windows by test type
Each specimen tells a different story because each samples different biology:
| Test type | Typical CBD detection window |
|---|---|
| Urine | cbd: CBD itself: not tested; contaminating THC could register 3+ days |
| Saliva (Mouth Swab) | cbd: not tested |
| Hair Follicles | not tested |
| Blood | cbd: not tested |
('Urine remains the employment default because it balances cost, window-length and legal defensibility. Metabolite CONCENTRATIONS (not presence/absence) decide results against cutoff tables, which is why hydration status moves numbers and why validity checks (creatinine, specific gravity) police dilution attempts.',)
Why detection works this way
No workplace panel screens for CBD. The molecule labs search for is THC-COOH, the metabolite of intoxicating THC — CBD is chemically distinct and does not convert into THC-COOH in amounts that matter.
The practical risk is contamination. FDA surveys have repeatedly found a meaningful share of retail CBD oils and gummies contain more THC than the label admits. Regular use of a mislabeled full-spectrum product can slowly accumulate enough THC-COOH to trip a screen.
Isolate-labeled products ('pure CBD', '0.0% THC') are lower-risk than full-spectrum, but third-party certificate-of-analysis testing is the only real assurance.
Factors that stretch or shrink your window
- Frequency & dose — chronic use saturates stores; single use clears fastest.
- Body composition — some metabolites persist longer with higher body-fat percentages.
- Metabolism & hydration — concentration shifts with fluid intake; elimination speed does not.
- Potency & route — concentrates and edibles deliver more analyte than light use.
Testing cutoffs in plain language
CBD itself is never screened. Tests look only for THC-COOH (50 ng/mL initial urine). A specimen under the initial cutoff reports negative without further work; a screen above cutoff gets confirmed by mass spectrometry before anyone sees a positive.
